The ladies club championship has begun. The semi finalists are Dos Grills, Maree Boswell, Jenny Dixon and Terri Thomson. Congratulations to you all.

St Augustine’s Staff had a wonderful social afternoon of bowls, BBQ and socialising. Thanks to Hugh Saunders for his organisation and also to Mal Williams, Greg Shilling, Mia Nowosad, Jenny Dixon and Helen Chapman for their time and help.

Marg Cox and Dos Grills made it through to the final of the Ladies 60 and Over Pairs. Congratulations to them for this grand effort.

The sheet for the GVBD Men’s Triples is on the board. Entries close soon so be sure to put your teams in early.

The next committee meeting is on next Tuesday October 18.

The Alan Mathieson Shield team travelled to East Shepparton and came up short, losing 92 shots to 107. Division 1 Welcomed Shepparton Park and sent them home losing 88 to 104. Division 4 enjoyed their trip to Rushworth and came home winners 93 shots to 57.

The Mathieson Shield game saw Kyabram lose 4 points to 14, with 2 rinks up and 2 down. Rob Sceney’s rink had a comfortable win 30 shot to 20. Barring a hiccup in the middle where they lost 10 shots in a 4 end block, they held control all day. Willis Mackrell in his first game for Kyabram played very well. Greg Shilling’s boys got off to a slow start being 0-6 after 4 ends. They rallied quickly and led 15 -9 after 14 ends. The game was very even after that with Greg’s team winning 26-19 in a fine team effort. Rob George’s team with first gamer Maree Boswell and returning hero Brian O’Meara had a struggle all day against a persistent East Shepparton rink. After 13 ends they trailed 5-18 but worked really well as a team to get back to 19-21 after 23 ends. Unfortunately the last 2 ends saw them lose 5 shots to go down 19-26. Darren Boswood’s boys had a day to erase from the memory bank. After losing a 6 on the 1st end it just didn’t get any better for the rest of the day. They all tried hard but were beaten 17-42.

The Alan Mathieson Shied team plays Shepparton Park at home next week.

Division 1 won their match at home 14 points to 4 against a well fancied and well-credentialed Shepparton Park side. Peter O’Brien’s rink was the standout for the day winning 30-8. Maurie Hateley, Cyril Napier and Merv Knight all bowled well and ably supported their skipper. Bob Canute with Bev Button, Danny O’Brien and Peter Kendall all bowling well got off to a flyer to lead 14-0 after 6 ends. Shepparton Park steadied for a while, but were no match for Bob’s team, who won convincingly 32-22. Mick Bradshaw and his team were right in the game after 15 ends only trailing 13-14. They were only able to win 2 ends after that and went down 19-28 in a good standard game. Phil Denham’s team of first gamer Mia Nowosad, Rob Anset and Gino Scapin had a good scrap with a very good team. They were in it up to their necks on the 20th end where they were only behind 17-22. They then lost a 5 to lose 23-30 after 25 hard fought ends. This was a fine win to kick off the season. A trip to Rushworth awaits them next Saturday.

Division 4 were far too strong for their Rushworth opponents winning 16 points to 2 in a big win to start the season. Gary Hawking, Brian Lindsay, Mary Greco and Jack Portia were the stars of the day winning 28-16. Everybody played well and they held sway all day, at one stage leading 21-8. New skipper Nardo Dipetta with Noel Thomson, Mitch Stevens and Ken Risstrom made sure their opposition were kept under control all day. They led 17-7 at afternoon tea and kept the pressure up after that to win 26-16 easing up. Theo Van Geldere celebrated his first game with the club by skippering his rink to 23-15 victory. He was very ably supported by Steve Doherty, Dos Grills and Teri Thomson. Ray Harrison’s team went down in a close one. They led 16-14 on the 20th end but lost a series of ones to go down 16-20. Division 4 have got off to a great start and play Shepparton Golf at home this week.

The Bowls night and Barbecue for The Gift at the Kyabram Blows Club was a huge success with well over 100 players, spectators, helpers and organisers enjoying a friendly and entertaining night on the greens. Greg and Leonie Shilling with daughter Narelle, need to be congratulated for their tireless work which raised over $1500 for people suffering from cancer in our local community.

Teams came from local businesses, families, sporting clubs and the supportive community. They all enjoyed themselves and many showed excellent skills and an interest in the game of Lawn Bowls. Thank you also to the members of the bowls club who helped with setting up, feeding the players and serving them refreshments. This should be the first of many such nights/events to help those in need in the Kyabram area.

Merrigum's division two bowls side hosted Shepp Golf and failed to trouble the scorer.

While Merrigum had quite a few missing, they were beaten by a far better side. We had a chance on two rinks but were never in the hunt on the other two.

Barry Hubble played against Frank Ivak and lost by 4 shots. After 15 ends they were 15 shots behind but managed to win the next seven ends to get within four.

Both teams picked up singles on the last two ends so four shots was the difference at the finish. Barry Parsons used an arm for the first time and he was able to help his team keep in touch.

Gary Mott looked like carrying on the way he finished in last year’s grand final.

Scores were level on end 13 and Merrigum promptly picked up six shots on three ends and looked like going on with the job. Sadly they never managed a score over the last five ends and went down by seven shots.

Gary played against Noel Perry. We would like to welcome former player, Wayne Shepherd, back to the club. His skill and knowledge of the game will be an asset to this rink.

John Firmer drew Graeme Matthews and lost by 13 shots. He was behind all day and it took him 23 ends to reach double figures. To the team’s credit they won the last 4 ends.

Joe Chant had G C Grant as his opponent and was well beaten. Similarly as with the above rink it took 23 ends to reach double figures. Chris French played his first ever game of bowls in this match and could be very well pleased with his efforts as he was up against Jim Pelly who was on fire.

Hopefully with more training and the return of some of the regulars we will have better news later on in the season.

Don’t forget our practice night is Thursday at 4pm and we urge all the members to stay for tea which begins at 6pm.

Carol would appreciate donations for her Christmas competition.

Members are asked to keep their eyes on the board for the club championship draw and arrange your games to be sure they are played before the due date.

All games are first to 25 and you don’t have to to wear club uniform. All games must be played north-south.

Our mid week team were washed out last week so let’s hope the weather gods are in a better mood this week.

Division six are due to start next Saturday but unfortunately they have a bye in the first round.

Valley View

Bowls are underway at Valley View for the 2016- 2017 season.

A successful 60 and over competition was held last Wednesday. The greens played well considering all the rain the previous day. The winning rink on the day was a team skippered by Ken Campbell.

Mid-week pennant:

Friday: Valley View played Tongala at Tongala, with Valley View winning by 19 shots. Jill Barrett’s team of B. Carling, B. Lyon and F. Gollan all played well to defeat D. Parkinson’s team 29/10. D. Isaac’s team: N. Findlay, L Andrews and G. Topp played well early in the game, leading 17/5 but a strong finish by Tongala finished with a draw 24/24.

Division 3:

Saturday: Valley View travelled to Deniliquin. Graeme Topp’s team of F. Findlay, D. Clavell and G. Beamish was the closest result going down 25/30. J. Keath, K. Hastie, B. Murray and R. Donohue were defeated by G. Gordon 12/35. R, Barrett, J. Barrett, B. Greenaway and N. Tomasini were defeated by N. Austin 13/34.

There is a working bee held every Tuesday morning at 9am. Any help would be appreciated.

Also there is bowls practice at 11am on Tuesday mornings. All welcome.
