Tough time for croquet team

October 27, 2016

Kyabram's association Croquet Section one team travelled to Mooroopna last week.

The doubles were very closely contested with Kyabram pair Helen Hastie and Chris Puetz taking an early lead. There was a lot of play from both sides without hoops being made. The Ky pair was able to hold on to the lead from Mooroopna Maroons’ Joyce Russell and Ken Richardson, taking the set 10 hoops to four.

The first singles was a close contest between Hastie and Russell until midway through the set when Russell took control, making a break of seven hoops. Meanwhile, Hastie found roquets hard to come by and the game soon slipped away with Russell winning 20 hoops to seven.

The second singles was a low scoring match with both Puetz and Richardson having a close tussle throughout the game, with Richardson winning nine hoops to seven.

The final scores were Kyabram one set 24 hoops to Numurkah two sets 33 hoops.

Kyabram will travel back to Mooroopna today to play Mooroopna Gold.

The top team Deni Gems travelled to Kyabram in what was to be a very close and exciting match. The Gems got off to a good start winning the first three games, leading 3/1 and seven hoops after the first round of singles. Kyabram fought back well and reversed the game scores. The games were now even but Deni had the lead by two hoops.

Due to an early start and impending bad weather it was decided to start the doubles before lunch.

Both teams won a game each, scores were dead level. The game played by Cameron Kelly and Sue Agosta went for over one hour and 40 minutes. After the lunch break Chris Puetz and Cameron Kelly fought hard and won their game by the closest of margins but unfortunately for Rayleen McDonald and Sue Agosta the Gems won the other game by three hoops and therefore secured the match.

Best player on the day was Deni’s Fred Littman, with four wins. Kyabram’s Cameron Kelly and Sue Agosta both won three games. Well done to Kyabram on another close match, it was a great day but unfortunately we just missed out on a win once again.
