Hornets stung into action

Team Hornets were winners in all three divisions of Basketball Kyabram’s opening round of Summer League on Monday night.

Thomas Burnett led the way for the Betta Homeliving Hornets’ 39-28 win over Kyabram Bakery Gators in Years 7/8/9 division.

Burnett scored 14 points and forced many turnovers late in the game. He had good support from leaping Jarom Owen Horn (12) and Kane Burt (6).

Seven of the Hornets team hit the scoreboard in a good all-round team effort.

Gators were in the game until the closing stages of the match, however, missed the drive of their leading scorer Liam Dillon (16) who was benched for the last three minutes.

Ashlan Hubble, Jake Plumb and Sam Plumb each scored four points.

In the Grade 5/6 division, Fab Flowers Hornets scraped home for an entertaining 28-27 victory over Kerr’s Amcal Gators.

Shane Arnold, with nine, was Hornets’ leading scorer. He also made several critical stops late in the game on Gators’ big man James Myers, who had 12 points.

Justin Bassett was Gators’ leading scorer with 13 points. Road runner Dylan Scoble covered lots of court and was Gators’ best defender.

In Grades 3 /4 division, Sam Marland scored 16 of Peter Walsh Hornets score to take a first-up win over Infinity Health Gators, 22-16.

Ben Dickens, Angus Mackenzie and Charlie Colston also hit the scoreboard for Hornets.

For Gators, Max Carroll (4) was the leading scorer. Jack Donaldson, Jim Hipwell, Bill Hipwell and Tyler Gower each scored two points.

In other matches, Mister Embroidery Raptors defeated Walker Real Estate Wildcats 36-32 in 7/8/9 division; Aldon Tutoring Centres Wildcats defeated an undermanned ACM Raptors 64-8 in 5/6 division; and Albion Motors Wildcats scored a 5-4 victory over Kyabram Veterinary Clinic Raptors in 3/ 4 division.
