KYABRAM’S batsmen need to score 190 runs this Saturday to beat Northerners and retain its spot in Cricket Shepparton’s top six.
On the opening day of its Haisman Shield clash on Saturday, Kyabram dismissed Northerners for 189 after losing the toss in the game at Tallygaroopna.
The Kyabram bowlers stuck at their task manfully all day with skipper Alex Young and young Charlie McLay both claiming three wickets.
Spinner Young reaped 3/40 off six tight overs, while McLay picked up 3/33 off 13 overs.
Lukas Hanslow and Kyle Mueller also chipped in with a wicket.
Kyabram openers Jackson McLay and Kyle Fitzgerald faced four overs without scoring a run before stumps were pulled, leaving a full batting line-up to try and get the winning runs this Saturday.
Kyabram has Northerners Numurkah and Karramomus snapping at its heels in the battle for sixth spot with only one home-and-away round remaining after this weekend.
■Kyabram will also be chasing runs this Saturday in its B grade clash with Northerners.
Sent into bat Northerners posted 181 off 72.4 overs to leave the result wide open when Kyabram takes to the batting crease.
Kyabram’s most successful bowlers were Matt McDonald who conceded just 18 runs from 14.4 overs in picking up three wickets.
Jason Parsons was also economical with 3/24 off 14 overs while spinner Nick Ryan also did his bit with 2/19 off seven overs.
■Young pace bowler Rylan Cunningham has put Kyabram in the box seat and in a position to attempt a maximum points win in its C grade clash against Karramomus.
Cunningham caused havoc in the Karramomus top order, claiming the first five wickets to fall in a destructive spell. He finished with 5/13 off nine overs which included five maidens as Karramomus crumbled to be 5/4 at one stage before recovering to make 87 off a little over 33 overs.
Then Kyabram secured first innings points as Brendan Baumann and young opener Jayden Fitzgerald steered it to 2/126 off 39 overs.
An aggressive Baumann cracked 52 with nine fours while Fitzgerald will resume his innings this Saturday on 36 not out.
Kyabram, sitting just inside the six, needs the win to keep Old Students and Mooroopna at bay in the battle to play finals.
