THREE years, three flags — Lachie Smith’s record stands up with the best of them after the star Kyabram tall added another premiership to the one he won with the Bombers last year.

He also played at Benalla in 2015 when it broke a 42-year premiership drought with victory against Kyabram.

He has loved playing for the Bombers, despite still living in Euroa and travelling to play at Kyabram.

He moved to Kyabram to be with his girlfriend Elle Groves, a star netballer with the Bombers.

She also played in a back-to-back flag for Kyabram’s A-grade team yesterday.

‘‘She’s three quarters of the reason why I came to Ky and she’s got another flag as well, so it’s been great these last two years,’’ Smith said.

‘‘I’ve trained every Thursday at Kyabram and I try to get there on Tuesdays, but my game isn’t based on a whole heap of running, so as long as I keep that base fitness going then I’m usually okay.’’

Smith has always been a versatile player, but has played most of his best football in the back half.

Just as he was at times in last year’s grand final, Smith was pushed forward to great effect against Shepparton to finish with three goals.

‘‘We thought with the wind that we would just leave me down that end of the ground,’’ Smith said.

‘‘I’ve never played with a bunch of blokes that have gotten along so well, there’s not a bad bloke in the bunch.

‘‘We’d do anything for each other and it’s no secret that to have success that you have to be mates on and off the field as well.’’
